Dark synth band from the Eighties.
Short history below modified and written by Clubbizarre.
Performed irregularly. Did a BFM live to air concert at the Auckland University.
They played at the City Hotel many years back .They did a fantastic cover of Death in Junes' "Calling" . Paradox grew from the ashes of K4.
Paradox Formed in late 1985 after Stephen Bolton the guitarist left K4, leaving the band essentially a 4 piece with Hugh Thomson (Drums) and Peter Denniston (Bass). Helen Goudge (vocals, Keyboards) and Ray Albon (vocals).
Without a guitarist a new sound was inevitable and created space in the music for experimentation.
Taking a 6 month break to write a complete new set of songs they first performed live at Shadows on 3rd of April 1986. They recorded ‘Only Portray’ At the Lab Studio with Bill Latimer and Glen Eissenhut in 1986, which managed to get number 24 in the BFM top 50.
A return to the Lab Studio to record ‘Distance’ using a sampler for the first time on June 27 1986. There followed more gigs, July 11 1986 at the Rising Sun on a Saturday afternoon with The Barbs and Sonya Waters, September 18 1986 at the Windsor Castle with Bygone Era and Rotting Dead, and finally October 3rd and 4th 1986 with In-Sect and Rotting Dead.
Helen and Ray Albon both left the band in 1987, as direction was lost and sound became stale and creativity dried up.
Now Paradox was a 2 piece, with Hugh Thomson on drums, keyboards and electronic percussion and Peter Denniston playing bass and keyboards. As a 2 piece they focused on becoming tighter, working on synchronicity with powerful rhythms and darker melodic bass. After 3 months Ray was asked to reconsider rejoining as a newer, darker, heavier sound was evolving.
With Ray back on board doing vocals and keyboards the 3 piece was ready to perform live again. First playing at the venerable Unicafe on August 14 1987 with Bygone Era, In-Sect and Fish For Life, they debuted their new sound receiving positive crowd reaction. Their next gigs were at the famous City Hotel, on September 4th and 5th 1987. They played there several times, one gig broadcast live to air on BFM. Their last live gig was recorded at the Unicafe in 1988 as a 'live to air' on BFM.
The band then broke up as Ray left for the UK.
Unfortunately, for whatever reasons, Paradox II never recorded anything in the studio and so this whole era of music remains only as live to air and from mixing desk, with the odd live bootleg.
