The Repair Man : ----- Dave Grant
Hi. Thanks for visiting
I've been doing guitar & stringed instrument repairs, in Fife, for about 15
years
and just over a year ago Katrina, my girlfriend, spied a shop and it is now a
full - time business 'Stringz - Dunfermline'.
Not long after I started repairing & setting up guitars and violins I met
Pete Agnew ( Bass player & singer..Nazareth )
at the local gala. I didn't know who he was but while having a tin of
lager in the sunshine
( b4 it wz bannd in public - alchohol, not the sun! ) we established he was a
guitar player and I repaired guitars.
So one thing led to another and Pete trusted me with his old Martin 00018.
Now, through that chance meeting, I have many great friends in & around
Dunfermline and from all over.
I have credits on Nazareth & Big Country albums and..... I wish I could play the
guitar, or entertain,
as well as Pete, Lee Agnew, Dan McCafferty, Jimmy Murison, Manny Charlton, Bruce
Watson, Ronnie Lessels,
Trevor Forster, Stevie Agnew, Chris Agnew, Willie Logan, Stevie Gillies (Box o'
bananas), Frank Robb (folkie fi Aberdeen),
Bruce Foxton (The Jam & Stiff Little Fingers), Jim Hyndman (incredible bluegrass
player/Scalded Cats).
Hopefully, over the months I'll mention all the other guys I've missed this time
round,
because believe me there are some humdinger musicians (and drummers of course)
of all ages.
A few years back I was contracted to repair school instruments throughout
Fife.
Most of this work comprised of repairing fairly inexpensive instruments, but as
always
I did my very best & the damages some kids did on the school bus made it a very
educational learning time for me!!
In fact many of the repair techniques I use today have their roots back then.
Only because it was too much travelling,
round the twenty high schools throughout the region, I had to let the contract
go and concentrate on the hands on repair work!
Ted Christopher, of Roadshow Music in Stirling, is another bloke I must thank.
Ted's shop has also provided me with a continuous stream of set -ups & repairs
from the Stirling area.
More to follow............
