Full Flava was founded by Dave Okwesia (a.ka Redlocz-dj) . Dave, or Redlocz as he is famiarly known was playing records by the age of 10. "My mum told me of the early days when i attempted to scratch, breakin, a few needles in the process."
Back in those days, Redlocz lived on Gee Street off Hessle Road. " Dad used to bring home friends off the ship and music was played at home all the time, things like Igbo, Jazz, and African music, so that is the kind of music i was raised upon."
" As Children in those days, we had no money to buy singles or albums we wanted. We used to save little by little all contribute and then decide what song it was we liked and then bought it. Back then the records cost 30 to 50pence."
For Dave/Redlocz it was a start of a hobby as a record collector and music lover. He eventually collected a fair amount of records, some of which he got from his father which he regrettably says he sold most to collectors. Dad bought them in the 50's when he was in London as a "Dandy" on the scene back then, thinking about it now they would have been worth quite a lot now."
As a youth Redlocz enjoyed the 70's & 80's pop music era where bands like Boney M, Adam & The Ants, The Police, Selecta, Bad Manners, Cindy Lauper, Loose Ends and Lionel Richie thrived, but says he could not help being drawn into black music.
He continued to collect the music he like on records and states he remembers Jeff Daniels and (Top of the pops) doing some popping moves hearing rappers delight for the first time. "I also remember Gary Bird (Yhe Gary Bird experience), The Zulu Nations first tracks such as "Eata Ayoy" which link Africa Bambata to the early hip hop era.I was heavily involved in the Jazz Funk movement 90's which was big and the Rn'B of that time.
The Electro Movement Era
"There was a time i used to listen to "Hijack" quite a lot not knowing that they were my cousins." Dave was well into break dancing and body popping then and even had a crew known as the "The Street Wreckin' Posse." which started as at a house party organised by Redlocz uncle Solomon on Cranbook avenue. " I remember Ham & Nim forming the breaking moves (6 step). Ham was doing the simple waves move, and from then i felt that i needed to be a part of it." Redlocz, Ham and Nim would link up and on a daily basis practising moves on the living room florr before going Tiffany's nite club after school. on a mMonday. Steven Harken was also a part of the crew a nd he was better known as plastic legs then, along side Marcus and Julian, known as the deaf twins (they heard the music throught e vibration on the floor and yet still keep in timeas routines were perfomed.
The first part of deejaying was at Preston road Youth Centre, Redlocz would dj there every Thusrday from 7-10pm before getting the last bus home. It was also the first time that he had residency to dj at a weekly youth club disco. Hip breakers, rappers and beat boxers would attend. "It was the first time people experiencedbreak dancing and rapping as a trend, i was about 15 years old at the time."
The centre also awarded Redlocz a trophy of recognition for the cobntribution to the youth centre. " It was a headrush.. i always knew i could move a crowd,. and the award confirmed this."
Redlocz felt that the feeling of turntablism, emceeing and deejaying was being appreciated. He never though that it would blow up to what is today with both commerical and underground movements. " i have to pay respect to hiphop becaus i am livinhg the dream. Hiphop has made me what i am today both spiritually, mentally and lucratively; and that is in hiphop promotions and hiphop education. My mum once said what ever you want you can work hard for it. We ain't born with a gold spoonin our mouth. I am here to put food o the table, shelter love and guide, the rest is up yo you.
"For real, i sed that !!"
Control you own destiny and shit for real. the world is you oyster, don't limit yourself, realise your talents and skills and don't supress what you have naturally got from with cause you will always one day wished you had used them.."
someone you see doing it or carried on doing it and doing well. iy makes you think, you don't have and excuse tp justify why you didn't do it.
the time is now, anything is possible. nowadays we have the ammo, you can achieve what ever you want with the help of positive people. doing it together as a movement we can all go through
