Long Island Poets

About Me

Since colonial days I have been home to many of America's greatest poets --- In the eighteenth century Jupiter Hammon rose up from his slave origins on the Henry Lloyd estate to become America's first published black poet --- In the nineteeth century Walt Whitman was born in West Hills and his attachment to the rural Quaker culture, the combined Dutch and English heritage, the maritime and agricultural economy, and his own extended family roots on his much loved 'Paumanok'(that's what he called me) was a touchstone to his life and work --- In the early 20th century, writers as diverse as Djuna Barnes, Paul Bowles, Frank O'Hara, Louis Zukofsky, Jack Kerouac and Dorothy Parker all traveled my byways, from the Gold Coast to the Hamptons --- So did European expatriates like WH Auden, David Burliuk and Andre Breton --- Recent years have seen new poets emerge from my shores to impact the nation's poetry, from Louise Gluck and William Heyen to Marvin Bell; and acclaimed authors have come to live and work here, including Louis Simpson, David Ignatow, Amiri Baraka and Kurt Vonnegut --- from the Hamptons to Huntington and from Fire Island to Great Neck, an unprecedented number of today's LONG ISLAND POETS continue to benefit from and build on this rich heritage.
