I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4.
I'm a writer, journalist, cultural critic, and the author of the book Somebody Scream! Rap Music’s Rise to Prominence in the Aftershock of Black Power (Farrar, Straus & Giroux). Over the past 16 years I've written about youth culture and politics for such publications as The San Francisco Chronicle, The Village Voice, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Vibe, The Source, and The Utne Reader. And currently, I blog at http://anarchist-graffiti.blogspot.com.
The short, simple version of "About Me": I'm a joke-filled, observant mofo with a warped sense of humor. Born and raised in Newark, NJ. (Too young to have witnessed the '67 riots but old enough to ask, "What's goin' on?"). I love Negroes but hate it when we make various forms of death and self-destruction fashionable. And, at 14, watching the Rock Steady Crew in "Flashdance" changed me friggin' life.
