About Me

Hieronymus Isambard "Jake" von Slatt is the proprietor of The Steampunk Workshop

Maker Profile - Steampunk on MAKE: television

I had a wonderful (though slightly grueling) time taping this segment with Emily Goldberg and her crew back in August. We were extremely lucky that a whole bunch of things all seemed to happen at once and we were able to pack a huge amount into the segment!

Steampunk Car Project:

I bought a VW Type-1 (Beetle) based 1929 SSK Mercedes Gazelle replica car on eBay. This is the perfect vehicle for Steampunkification as it has classic lines yet is not a classic itself. In other words no one is going to hurl flames at me when I 'punk it up a bit!

Telegraph Replica taps out RSS Feeds:

When I was a boy my father brought home from work a telegraph sounder replica kit. He was the director of the library for a local college and the sounder kit was one of several museum quality reproductions of 19th Century technology the library had acquired. The lovely brass sounder must have made a large impression, because I have wanted one for my own ever since.

Copper Plating and Etching Altoid Tins:

In which your intrepid experimenter tries to copper plate Altoids tins and etch them in a salt solution. Toner transfer using magazine pages as media is also tried with some success.

I was recently interviewed for the Aether Emporium

I also buy things on eBay that weigh 30,000 pounds

Clockwork Trilobite Brooch:

In which your humble proprietor theorizes that; if he can etch into one side of a brass plate he may be able to etch completely through the plate from both sides. A fixture is constructed, current is applied, electrolyte boils and jewelery is made.

A Clockwork Guitar - The Steampunk Stratocaster

I have a Fender US Highway One series Stratocaster, which is a half decent guitar, but looks just like a million other Strats.  I had been planning to replace the pick guard with a black mother of pearl guard but my experiments in electrolytic etching made me think I'd like to try something a bit more unique.  Thus the Steampunk Strat was born.
