Carol Jay, solo artist

I was singing Beethoven's Second Piano Concerto, the last movement, the syncopated one, before I could talk. That was in the crib. I've been playing piano, composing, arranging all my life. Spent many summers at Interlochen Music Camp and a year at Interlochen Arts Academy (senior year of High School). Theory Major at Indiana University and lots of post graduate work at Juilliard and various individuals, such as Walter Bishop, Jr. and Don Sebesky. I was a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop for several years and studied composition and arranging under Bob Brookmeyer and Manny Albam, r.i.p. My first gig in New York was as a keyboard player for an all-woman Latin band called Latin Fever. I have done a lot of sheet music arranging for Warner Bros. Music, Chappell Music, Judy Collins, Ashford & Simpson, Steve Ross, Julie Wilson, and dozens of performers, songwriters, and cabaret singers. Fortunately for me I never had to take a waitress job, for two reasons. I have bad feet. My ears are good, so I have a knack for transcribing music, which is a good survival skill to have for a musician. More and more I am getting into sequencing and arranging through MIDI. I am also interested in writing for TV and film and love to do so whenever I get the opportunity. I use a Korg Triton, Pro X, an MAC G-5, and Finale 2007. Some of my hobbies include, dancing, (all kinds), needlepoint, reading, and staring at the ceiling. Also, I love to keep alive the fading art of scintillating conversation.
