The ACTION Project - updated on May 21, 2009
PAST - Originally formed in 1985, “Action†is a long-time concept devised by acclaimed guitarist / songwriter Chip of What Matters, Mars Hill and The Hitmen. Action features the soaring vocals of Jack Marques (Solo, Crossover, Unknown God, Mars Hill) and the musical talents of bassist Chris Sutherland (Mars Hill, Action), keyboardist Ruben Demello (Galactic Vibe Music Productions, Crossover, Unknown God, Mars Hill), drummer Chris Longo (Project Broken, Dirty Deeds, Hysteria, Promises) with additional drums from Mark Duane (Trendkill, Paradox, Action, Touch, Krankenstein).
As founder and guitarist for the band Action during the mid to late 80’s, Chip shared the stage with national acts such as Quiet Riot, Firehouse, Slaughter, Rough Cutt and Zebra among many others. As the musical landscape quickly changed in the early 90’s, Action split not to be heard from again until he collaborated with singer / songwriter Jack Marques a decade later. Jack was also from the early 80's style, original scene from the band Crossover. He had shared the stage with acts like Whitecross, The Rez Band and Sacred Warrior. Marques had also worked in the studio with producers Rob Rock (Driver, Impellitteri) and Joe Carrier (Joey McIntyre).
Between bands and life itself, both Chip and Jack had each individually written and recorded a number of outstanding melodic rock tracks over the years which ranged from 80’s rock / metal to more modern adult oriented rock. Each had always been saving these unused gems for some future project; they just weren’t sure what it would be.
Between 2000 - 2002, six stunning tracks were cut with original Action bassist Chris Sutherland, Ruben Demello ..boards and former 90's Action member Mark Duane on the drums (four of those demos can be heard in the MySpace player above). It appeared that new life would be breathed into these future hits (co-produced by Stryper’s Michael Sweet & Kenny Lewis) when the demos landed them an offer from a label.
But as fate would have it, while this duo was writing material together a new band was being conceived. Action and the deal were put on the back burner as Chip and Marques’ collaboration were responsible for what was later known as the nu-breed styled rock band Mars Hill.
Their first album, Sink Or Swim (also produced by Michael Sweet & Kenny Lewis at Mixed Emotions Music), garnered high praise, excellent reviews and established international acclaim for the band. The album was supported in front of sellout crowds while opening for Grammy winning artists Stryper on their 2003 reunion tour. Marques even sang on two new tracks which appeared on Stryper's Seven: Best Of record. Mars Hill later released Prelude (produced by Marques) and shared the stage with Tesla, Shinedown, Jani Lane (Warrant), Vanilla Fudge, Big City Rock and Pray For The Soul Of Betty featuring American Idol Constantine Maroulis.
Mars Hill's songs were featured on the STATION FAMILY FUND's Rock to the Rescue benefit CD with all proceeds going to the victims and their families of that deadly nightclub fire and on N' ROCK UNITED's benefit project Web site with all proceeds going to the Children’s Miracle Network which covers the medical expenses of hospitalized children.
Even though Mars Hill had racked up so much praise in the span of three short years, the group officially disbanded in 2006 so that its members could each chart a different course.
Never feeling that Action was quite finished, in mid 2006, Chip approached friend and manager Ron Vining (The Calm, Mass, Mars Hill, Trigger Effect, WickedWitch) about getting the project off the ground again. Chip turned to some of his former band mates and secured their talents along with those of long-time friend and drummer Chris Longo. Vining began shopping the demos and laying the groundwork for getting the record completed. In February 2007, he signed a deal with Serafino Perugino of Frontiers Records, s.r.l. on behalf of the band.
Action immediately began work on five new songs and headed into the studio in March 2007 to finish the album with producer Tony Ricci and Ray Fogarty at TRIAD Recording Complex. The album was completed in May, mixed in June and mastered by Matt Azevedo at M Works Masteringin July and October 2007.
Photography was handled by Ken Martin of Amstock Photo with album artwork by Richard Mace at Sirius-B. Creative (Journey, James Christian, Soul SirkUS, Talisman, Jeff Scott Soto, RTZ, MelodicRock.com's: The Beast Inside) and our manager.
PRESENT - Action's self titled debut CD was officially released on Frontiers Records (Europe, 12-7-07), King Records (Japan, 3-12-08) and Locomotive Records (USA, 03-25-08), with the following running order:
1. Without Your Love 4:36
(Chip, C. Sutherland)
2. Someday 3:33
(Chip, J. Marques, C. Sutherland, R. DeMello & C. Longo)
3. Here In My Heart 4:01
(Chip, C. Sutherland)
4. Destiny 5:23
(Chip, J. Marques, C. Sutherland, R. DeMello & C. Longo)
5. Forever 4:46
(Chip, J. Marques, C. Sutherland, R. DeMello & C. Longo)
6. Loveless 3:16
(Chip, C. Sutherland, R. Monterio)
7. Don't Leave Me Lonely 4:29
(Chip, C. Sutherland, K. Morin)
8. Heaven Tonight 3:28
(Chip, C. Sutherland)
9. Cinderella 5:16
(J. Marques)
10. Feel The Fire 5:11
(Chip, C. Sutherland & R. Monterio)
11. Is It Love 3:46
(Chip, C. Sutherland & K. Morin)
Bonus Track for Japan
12. Forever [Piano Version] 5:21
(Chip, J. Marques & R. DeMello)
Another great track titled:
Never Alone 3:31
(Chip, J. Marques & C. Sutherland)
was originally recorded for the debut and now appears on www.MelodicRock.com's Writing On The Wall CD. MRCD5 is the latest compilation disk from the popular AOR music Website, released on July 6, 2009, along with China Blue, Mass and other top artists. Never Alone is a different take on the debut record's Heaven Tonight and sounds completely different due to its lyrics and harmonies. It has a more modern / alternative sound which didn't quite fit the overall vibe of this record. This was unfortunate as it also pays tribute to the late Boston singer Brad Delp and is a great song. Details about the monster compilation will be featured on this page and will be announced in June 2009.
With Action’s storied history, the guys are not sure if their debut on Frontiers Records will either be a “project†or a band. The status really does not matter as the songs are so strong that the music speaks for itself with Burrn Magazine giving it an unheard of "93/100" rating.
Nominated for "Best Album by a Group (Major)" sums up the type of buzz that this project has received. Everyone involved with Action is happy to have finally put all the pieces of this melodic rock masterpiece together in what Limelight Magazine also calls one of "the best full-length albums of the year."
Chip, Jack, Chris, Ruben, Mark and Chris are very appreciative of their longtime, new and future fans and they hope to take Action out on the road in the support of the disc in the United States, Europe and Japan.
The wait is over, 2008 is the year that melodic rock fans across the globe are finally getting a whole lot of Action!
FUTURE - Chip, Chris Sutherland and Mark Duane headed into the recording studio in February/March 2008, to cut nine basic rhythm tracks for what may be the foundation of the Action II record. While Chip and Ruben DeMello have been writing music for an all-new TBA project.
Though Vining Management is currently in talks with labels, vocalists and musicians for these and other projects, their door is always open to unsolicited interest and offers. Be sure to give Ron a shout if interested.
Action is also seeking license deals for their debut with bonus material in Canada and South America (Brazil). Please contact Vining Mangement for additional information.
Stay tuned...
