A native of Providence Rhode Island, Chelsy Lau (pronounced law) began playing piano at a young age and was writing music before she was in her teens. The singer/songwriter grew up on the music of her parents (Bessie Smith, Pink Floyd, Cat Stevens, and Janice Joplin to name a few), who were both strongly involved in music and the arts. As Chelsy grew musically, she also incorporated the influences of the music of her own time from artists like Tori Amos and Fiona Apple, to Nirvana and NIN.
Early on in her career as a live performer, Chelsy gained her experience as a front person for various acts playing stages from Maine to NYC. “There are so many valuable lessons I learned in that time period that I still use today, but the need to stay true to myself and my instrument greatly surpassed the need to ’just sing’, so I had to move onâ€.
Although she pays tribute to the greats of the past and those of today, deeming them her “rock and roll heros†Chelsy’s need to create, play, and perform has and remains ever present. Chelsy contrasts the soothing sounds of her piano with melodic yet powerful vocals, and retains an extensive collection of original material. Some taking a playful approach on the irony of misfortune, and some cutting to the very core of our individual need to search the soul.
