Photographer Barnard Jacobs is dying from an unnamed malady. What seems worse to him is that the woman that he is in love with, D-list celebrity Ashley Brett, cannot bring herself to admit her own feelings for him. She is too wrapped up in her own problems: cocaine addiction, and a desire to find a wealthy husband before her early thirties segue into middle age. Even as the two profess their intense devotion for each other, they are unable to bridge the distance between them.
As a typical whirlwind New York City evening begins, Barnard finds himself along for the ride as shallow fashionista Madeleine invites him out for a drink and begs him to call Ashley to get them drugs. He does so reluctantly and, against his better nature, invites Ashley to join them. The awkward trio turns into a party when wealthy Internet entrepreneur Boccaccio brings his entourage to her apartment during the course of celebrating his birthday. Barnard, feeling weak and ill, can do nothing but watch as Madeleine clings to Boccaccio. As the evening carries on in its hedonistic manner, Ashley tends to Barnard even as she tells him about her new boyfriend; Boccaccio and Madeleine pair off as she becomes entranced by his gargantuan net worth; and Boccaccio and his friends engage in a revelry of drugs and sex. Barnard can eventually take no more and retires to his own apartment, where Ashley, seeking peace and solitude, joins him in a chastely romantic expression of affection.
In flashback, Barnard thinks back to how he met Ashley: hired by his best friend, a financier named Pickering, to take a series of photos of eyes of beautiful women, he auditioned her as a model. Despite her turning up late and obviously being hungover, the two forged a deep personal connection and became a couple for a brief time. When Ashley admitted that she was in love with Barnard, he found himself unable to believe that her feelings were genuine and not an act to ensure that he would hire her. Despite their romance ending, somehow the two managed to become extremely close in a relationship with no defined borders.
Back in the present day, Boccaccio and Madeleine sink further and further into drug induced insanity, which becomes even more problematical when Madeleine announces that she is pregnant. Unable to make any kind of constructive decisions about their life together, the two become more and more removed from the world around them.
As Barnard learns that death is near and his condition worsens, he reaches out to Ashley one last time in a final attempt to save both of them.
