About Me

MyGen Profile Generator

William Vandry has trained in BJJ with members of the Gracie family and more immediate, the Machado brothers, nephews of Carlos Gracie, founder of the Gracie Jiu-jitsu system. Vandry's chief instructor in BJJ is Carlos Machado, and has been a Machado representative in BJJ since 1996. Vandry has competed since 1996, and has earned one Gold, Two Silver and one fourth place finish at the prestigious Pan American world championship. Vandry is one of 11 Carlos Machado Black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) residing in Texas and was one of the first four ever promoted to Black belt in Texas. Vandry is also the only Black belt in Southwest Texas under legendary 6th degree Black belt and multiple World champion Carlos Machado, who is the pioneer of BJJ in Texas.
Vandry constantly competes on a world level with the best in BJJ. On a more local level, Vandry teaches classes and private lessons to his students and out of towners at his academy in Austin Texas.
One of the busiest BJJ instructors in Texas, Vandry also teaches seminars for other martial arts schools, community organisations and law enforcement officers.
Vandry has designed a special program called VCATS (Vandry Combative Arrest Tactics and Strategies) for law enforcement officers designed around arresting, apprehending and containing suspects or criminals in "live" scenarios.
Overall Vandry teaches four different methods of BJJ at his academy. 1) Self-Defense 2) Sport 3) NHB 4) Law enforcement
SELF DEFENSE is taught in general through classes at the academy regarding fundamental techniques from escaping headlocks to finishing with armlocks and chokes to more advanced techniques.
SPORT is exemplified through special classes before tournaments that involve tournament rules, strategies, time limits and the competitive nature of grappling.
NHB or Full contact competition is the training of competitors who train mainly no gi and practice a combination of takedowns, striking and submission grappling.
LAW ENFORCEMENT training is a special program called VCATS which involves not a sport strategy or patient style, but more of an aggressive style to subdue, pin either standing or on the ground to arrest and detain.
Vandry has competed in World championships at each belt level in BJJ (Blue, Purple, Brown and Black) and has placed on a world level three times.
Vandry also has pioneered Texas' only fully functional women's BJJ class and has a large student base of women that train with each other and adult classes with men as well. Vandry has had successful results with women in competition, having three of his women place 1-2-3 in the last State championship. Vandry's primary philosophy to aid training in BJJ is humility. "Ego is not for BJJ. Humility, camaraderie and being an honorable student to help fellow students will help groom you as a future instructor."
Vandry has a successful children's class on Tuesdays and Saturdays in which children learn the fundamentals of BJJ as well as bonding with each other to understand team support, humility, confidence and respect to develop into their adult ages.
