NUANCE Soundscape Sundays
A Showcase of Indie Art Rock/Pop

Please read the blog regarding non Canadian artists before inquiring about playing at the festival or showcases.
Welcome to the NUANCE myspace website.
A site with a focus on more Artistic Pop/Rock music. Now before you go yelling that I'm a pretentious snob, let me fill you in on why I think we need NUANCE. Over the years, the Southern Ontario music scene has seen many artists and bands come and go, some great, some good, and some not so good. The great or even good artists have always been the minority. There's far more unimaginative, uncreative, uninspired, unskilled, overall inartistic bands playing in the clubs, getting the radio play, and most of all, getting press. Usually the more artistic bands fall by the way side because most people have been brainwashed (due to over exposure of mundane bands) into only being able to comprehend and listen to simplistic commercialized music. What NUANCE strives to do is give the more experimental, non-commercial, left field, progressive rock, (all what I call art rock), a voice. Especially the indie artists.
What the hell constitutes Art Rock?
There is no definite sound or style to Art Rock. It's more to do with the details of the music. The fact that there are details is a start. Examples found in Art rock are, experimentation of sounds, odd and changing time signatures, multiple or unusual song structures, integration of other genres of music, creative, changing moods and or proficient playing at ones instrument.
Popular past and present Local artists that fall into this category are National Velvet, Jane Sibery, Twilight Rituals, Hawksley Workman and Rush.
Popular international artists would be Radiohead, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Soundgarden, Chris Cornell, A Perfect Circle, Dream Theater, Marillion, P.J. Harvey, Cold Play, Kate Bush, The Beatles, Queen, Phish and Queensryche, to name a few.
Of course this site wouldn't be much good if I didn't mention the indie artists that are out there playing this style of music. Wilton Said... (shamless self promo), Steve Cochrane, Dream Aria, Phideaux, Lorne Hind, Hunter Eves, Counterpoint, Half Past Four, Plenty, Ken Baird to name a few.
If you were to listen to any of these artists, you would find that not all of their music is simple or easy to listen too. In some cases it might take 3 or more listens of the same song to fully appreciate it. That's not to say that these same artists can't or don't produce simpler music, in fact many of these artists later on in their career produced music which was far LESS complex then what they had produced earlier. A great example is the band Genesis, compare the music on a early recording such as “A Trick of a Tail" to that of a later recording “Invisible Touch" and you'll hear the difference. However, even with the simpler, more commercial music, you can still hear that the musicians are all extremely proficient.
NUANCE will also be putting together showcases and mini festivals in the Southern Ontario region.
So I hope that gives you a bit of an overview of what NUANCE is all about.
Enjoy
