Samuel was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. In 1953, at the age of eight, he, his parents and brother, in search of the “American Dream,†relocated to New York City. After military service he married his high school sweetheart Carmen Rivera (native of Añasco). They became parents of two girls, Sandra and Kristine.
Samuel studied art at The High School of Industrial Arts, The School of Art and Design, and The School of Visual Arts in NYC. His technique is full of color, movement and minute details. His paintings range from New York street scenes to nostalgic Puerto Rican landscapes and illustrations from classic novels and fantasy. Every painting tells a story and the observer is drawn into the scene.
Sam is grateful to have benefited from two great cultures. Despite having lived in New York most of his life, his heart never quite left La Isla del Encanto, “the Isle of Enchantment.†In 2002, the artist realized his dream of one day returning to Borinquen to live. He now lives in Arecibo where he pursues his artistic career painting his nostalgic and historic scenes of island life.
