It’s no surprise that DJ Romi plays the kind of music that she does. Her smooth, eclectic blend of breaks, house, electro, and minimal creates live sets that always keep you both guessing and dancing. In “real†life, Romina Rodriquez has cultivated just as eclectic an array of jobs, interests, and passions. Oh, and she doesn’t stop dancing either, often coming out from behind the decks to throw down on the dance floor with everyone else when she drops a favorite track.The Santiago, Chile native discovered her love of music at a college radio internship, which in turn led to many successful voice over gigs and acting work. Most recently, this path has led to a successful career in print and runway modeling, and she is currently represented by Gilla Roos, R&L, Chelsea Talent Agency and Flaunt Models. And that’s not counting her bartending, real estate work, and, of course, DJing and producing. Told you she was versatile.Romi and dance music became acquainted in 1997 when she began attending NY & NJ area raves, honing her dancing skills to breaks and drum & bass. Matt Hahn, her husband and frequent DJ partner, introduced the quick learner to the progressive and trance side of electronic music via the NY club scene, and his gift of her very own decks for graduation meant the quick learner was soon mixing beats on her own.DJ Romi’s music career has followed a similar trajectory to her musical interests, seeing her perfect her early skills playing breaks at parties and raves for the likes of Liquid Sky and Stuck on Earth, including such massive events as Boo 7 on Randal’s Island and Ecosystem 1 in Brazil and Portugal. Now over eight years later her style has matured into a wide-ranging, sophisticated sound, seeing her play most major New York venues such as Crobar, Sullivan Room, Love, Exit, Shelter, and Le Souk frequently, with gigs in Miami and Atlantic City, as well. Her Crobar appearance (for Flawless Media) led to a finalist spot in the club’s up-and-coming DJ competition, where she and Matt placed 2nd. Other accolades include high profile spots at the Village Voice “Voice Box†party, a gig at the Burn Industries Steve Lawler boat cruise, and a sponsorship by record bag manufacturer Slappa.The future sees DJ Romi focusing on the other important aspects of her career, including producing original material and more frequent touring.
