Biography… I hate writing these things, never know what to put!
To be honest we’ve done so much that it’s hard to write it into a condensed form… I’ll try though…
All of us have been around the Isle of Wight ‘scene’ for a few years now.
Mucking about in several different bands and causing all kinds of damage to those of a mental disposition... Namely ourselves!
They were great days to be playing with some great musicians and characters. Most of all was a man by the name of Dan Damage.
He was the godfather of our community and without him we would never have done any of what we have.
When I was about 16 Dan through me out the pub and told me to take my attitude home and form a band.
I formed Kody (or Elapse as it was then) with fellow underage drinkers Gareth Maude (Now Wild oats), Steve Richmond and Simon Cook.
We knocked about for a couple of years with new members coming and going regularly as they do in small town bands. Then Charlotte Ripley came in on guitar and we were pretty stable for a while.
But a two week tour of the Mid West America (Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison) seemed to act as a catalyst to disrupt that stability.
The more serious I got, the more the others didn’t seem to share that dream. Is completely understandable as (ask any serious musician) it isn’t an easy life and is full of knock backs and low patches.
Tim Pritchard and Turlough Ducie joined me and Steve and we set about making things happen.
We got a man and a van. Nigel ‘Taffy’ Lloyd came along as a driver/roadie/tour manager and we set about endless touring. We took the attitude of playing everything and anything, from Falmouth to Newcastle and everything in between.
It was a period of great fun and terrible health. Every night was a weekend and for 28 days in September 2004 we averaged 9.6 beers a day! Friends and family back home hardly recognised the mess that we returned in!
Unfortunately by this time Steve had had enough and was replaced on bass mid tour by Turloughs brother Ollie.
Around that time we were spotted by a management company and were taken to London to record and gig more selectively.
Producer Nick Smith (Pink Floyd, Gary Numan) recorded a demo album with us (Polaroid’s From Alison) at Park gate Studios in East Sussex. It was an amazing honour to work with a great producer in such amazing surroundings.
Just when it seemed everything was about to explode (in a good way) it all caved in on us. Rows between band members and management caused an irreparable rift and we were on our way back to the Isle of Wight.
We picked ourselves up and started again.
We have new management in Purple Fox Music and things are starting to look up.
We’ve just finished two music videos for our singles recorded with Dave Allen (the cure) and are about to begin work with him on an album.
That’s just scraping the surface of what we’ve been through during the last few years. How many bands can say they killed a guy in Wales during a dance competition? He won a T shirt and then hit the floor!
Fundamentally we’re just a bunch of guys from a small island having a crack together. I hope the sincerity comes across in the music and performances….
If ever we’re in your area, come say hello and we’ll knock the froth off a few.
Peace. G x
