About Me

I'm interested in using non-musical objects to create music. I play traditional South American instruments like the box, the pot (similar to the Indian ghatam), Chilean drums and Peruvian chajchas but also add bamboo tubes, whistles, egg beaters, knives and forks, whizzing wind-up toy spaceships and anything else I lay my hands on or design that makes a sound. My live improvisations reflect how sound is transformed with the use of electronics just as text is transformed when translated from language to language: meanings change, intentions are adapted, and the result is not a literal translation but a freer rendition and interpretation of the sonic intention. I've been solo-performing my own "instant compositions" for 5 years now and my most recent albums are CONSTELLATIONS OF BIRDS (2003), PINGÜINOS EN FLOR (2005), THESE DARK MATERIALS (2006, funded by a Fondo de la Música award from the Chilean Ministry of Culture) and TRANSATLÁNTICO (2007, with Toto Alvarez). I've pretty much been based in London since fleeing Pinochet's military regime in the mid-70s. In 1986, Miguel Campusano and I founded Quilombo Expontáneo, the foremost Latin American improv group in the UK. Over the years, I've played with a good many musicians here, there and everywhere, including Los Jaivas, Grand Union Orchestra, Sergio Ávila, Mauricio Redolés, Acting Up, Vladimir Miller & The Brick Lane Film Ensemble, Akemi Kuniyoshi Group, Paul Moss, Alquimia, Marcio Mattos, John Edwards, Lol Coxhill, Peter Jackson and Jorge Campos, among others.
