About Me
This is the story of a woman who chose a boy’s name: RoBERT. When she was a child, she had a passion for classical ballet. But she had to give up dancing at the age of 15 because of articulation problems. She went on to take theatre lessons and acted in plays by authors Ionesco and Molière. She even played the part of a teenager Geraldine Chaplin. In the mid 1980s, she developed a passion for music. She went looking for a musician and got in touch withMathieu Saladin, a schoolmate she had met a few years before in Junior High. This was the beginning of a love affair and an artistic collaboration which have continued ever since. Her poetic texts deal with childhood, love, death. Her first release in 1990 ‘Elle se promène’ for the most part produced by Neal Aston in London, got a lot of airplay on French radios and even became a dance hit in Japan. She recorded a debut album in 1993 (Sine), then a second one in 1997 (Princesse de Rien), creating a nonconformist musical world which combines electronic loops with ancient instruments and modern choreographies. During this period, she also worked with some famous French video directors such as Michel Gondry (Björk, Daft Punk). In 1998, an unexpected admirer fell under RoBERT’s spell: the Belgian novelist Amelie Nothomb wrote six songs for her third album (Celle qui tue), but also a romanticized biography of the singer (The book Of Proper Names) in 2002, selling over 250,000 copies worldwide. A track from this album, ‘Le Prince Bleu’, caught the attention of Majandra Delfino (Roswell, Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic) and, in 2003, RoBERT paid a visit to Majandra in California to record a brand new version of that song with her. This duet gave rise to a computer-animated video which received several awards worldwide. In the mean time, RoBERT released her first compilation album in France (Unutma, « Don’t forget », in Turkish).
Her 4th studio album was released in November 2005, featuring a more acoustic instrumentation (harpsichord, clarinet, harp, violins).
The album’s first single (‘Personne’ /‘No one’) was supported by a video directed by Gabriel Aghion (Pédale douce, Belle Maman, Le Libertin). Once more, this video displays her interest in pushing boundaries in the video world to a cinematic level. In the meantime, Romain Tranchart, ex Modjo (‘Lady’), supplied two electro pop remixes.
