Freaks was originally the brain child of Bournemouth’s Justin Harris and London based, Luke Solomon. They began recording for Phono, home of Herbert and Swag and their first few releases, which came in three parts, saw them journey through filter disco (The Shrunken Head), quirky mid tempo house (Journey's Through Happiness), and minimal techno (The Milwaukee Stance). Then came the time for them to set up their own label and they kicked off the Music For Freaks imprint by releasing a series of 4 12 inches, each with a collectable sleeve. MFF was also home for their albums, The Beat Diaries (which saw them team up with their now long term front lady, Stella Attar for lyrical / vocal inspiration), Meanwhile Back At The Disco, and The Man Who Lived Underground. Tracks from these albums, such as “Turning Orange”, “The Creeps”and “Where Were You When The Lights Went Out” have since become Freaks seminal records.Luke & Justin soon decided it was time to take Freaks live and in addition to Stella, they teamed up with the infamous Jonny Rockstar on guitar, Sascha Darroch Davies on drums and Rub on bass. Playing across the board in both dance and the more open minded indie venues, they realized Freaks could fit into both worlds and rock the place – from their kick ass shows at Fabric, London, Soho’s Madame Jojo’s and Old Street’s Cargo to Arthur Baker’s night at Club 11 in Amsterdam and Homelands and Global Gathering….In summer of 2007, their huge selling underground record, ‘The Creeps” re-appeared in a new form. Remixed by Vandalism and using the guys original bassline as the key hook, the record was re-ignited in the clubs again. Luke, Stella and Justin then decided to rework it further by adding a new vocal and Stella wrote and recorded the twisted lyrics for the newly named “The Creeps – Get On The Dancefloor”. It became an even bigger record with Radio 1 playlisting it 7 weeks upfront of release and Jo Whiley picking it as her “Record Of The Week”. It then went on to reach no 9 in the UK charts.“Freaks - Luke Solomon and Justin Harris - are one of our longest-running purveyors of wigged-out dancefloor mayhem and 'The Creeps' turned into their anthem a few years ago with its disparaging Bush Tetras style post-punk vocal. Now reactivated with new mixes, it looks set to cause further damage. Some classics never die and this is one that never lost its raging boner.” – Kris NeedsThe guys continue to release Freaks material on their Music for Freaks imprint and at the end of 2007, Tweekers & Repeater were released on limited 12” and as a digital download, shortly followed by a digital release of Boiling Point featuring remixes from Derrick Carter and marketed largely to their US fanbase.Luke, Justin and Stella are now writing new material for their 4th studio album and from early demo listening, it looks as if it will be a mesh of all their electronic, disco and leftfield pop influences and will undoubtedly re-introduce their fans to a whole new level of Freakish behaviour !!
