New Street began as an underground art gallery, a hole-in-the-wall showcase for emerging and experimental Atlanta artists. In a city saturated with commercial art galleries catering to the nouveau riche, New Street created an alternative space to expose the less visible, less commercial side of the city’s art scene. From its inception, art openings were coupled with music acts, and as the roster of talented musicians grew, so did the body of live recordings. Unadorned and raw, New Street Volume 1 (NS01) is the first compilation of those live performances.
In late 2006 the gallery opened its boutique record label dedicated to recording and producing the full length albums of a small cross section of Atlanta artists. As a record label, New Street functions under the same credo as the gallery—the musicians are emerging and largely underground, willing to take risks, and decidedly against the mainstream.
