Psychic Date

About Me

Psychic Date is the brain-child of Peter Jones;guitarist/vocalist from Australian noise bands Jeffrey Jeffrey Hysterectomy and Whore and English bands Tongueman,Love Sex Death and Dropouts.Formed in Sydney in 1996 with drummer John Murphy [SPK,Death in June,Knifeladder] Psychic Date played an uncompromising loop-driven amped-up brand of improvised music unfamiliar to the rock-crowd but finding favour with the more left-field,avante-garde music lover. This led to shows on the first three 'What is Music' festivals and support slots with Mr Bungle off-shoots Secret Chiefs and Faxed Head on their Australian tours.Psychic Date have recorded two albums -'At Home at the Institution' and '45' which will be available on-line on their soon to be launched web-site with downloads available here on myspace also.Recently in september'october 2006 Psychic Date have played shows in Sydney at The Cad Factory with Toydeath and also at the Lansdowne on one of the gloriously chaotic Triangle Side-show Alley sunday 'arvo events. At present the band are writing some new material and also recording at the very beautiful Big Jesus Burger Studios.

Influences: Psychic Date present a very diverse textural multi-layered sound and as such have many varied influences; so hey! lets go!.Way back my first influences were the sounds of nature in my homeland of New Zealand,of birds singing ,leaves rustling in the wind (plenty ov that!) rain falling on a tin roof (LOTS ov that too!).Then there was Bing Crosby-my dad's favourite,Th Stones-my brothers favourite and also at this time the music on television, huge thematic cowboy tunes, voodoo music of the deep south, and also the polynesian rhythms of Maori music. Then came Hendrix(wow!),Steppenwolf,The Doors,Groundhogs,Pink Floyd(r.i.p.Sid), and many others as myself and the rest of the world came to terms with the aftermath of the mind -musical -artistic freedom we had created in that halcyon time of the '60s-early '70s.Punk i loved for its attitude and energy and finger-up at music's bloated aristocracy and also for playing THE major role in killing off what i found to be the most contemptable, loathsome, irrelevant musical form ever;the west-coast sound- YUK!,excuse me while i nip outside and VOMIT !Musically Punk never quite cut the mustard but it did open the way for more extreme music to surface -think,The Birthday Party,The Fall,Magazine,Pere Ubu, and also breathe new life into the careers of the true artists like Captain Beefheart,Frank Zappa,Lou Reed,Eno et al.OK here's the real influences;Pharoah Sanders,Sonny Sharrock,Miles Davis,Ornette Coleman,Archie Shepp,Jimi Hendrix,The Seeds,Neu,Sid Barrett,Tommy Bolin,Amon Duul 1 and 11,God (the band !),Praxis,Merzbow,John Cage,Bill Frisell,Cream,Kurt Vonnegut,Sigur Ros (huge fan!),Faust,Stockhausen,Gamelan music,Painkiller,Ravi Shanker and sooo much more but i thought i'd run out of space; so lets keep going!James Blood-Ulmer,John Coltrane,Don Cherry,Sun Ra(ab-so-lootly!),Buckethead,Primus,Mr Bungle,Japanese traditional music,Tom Wolfe, psychedelics, squelchy electronica,Napalm Death, sex, good food,Eraserhead,under-water life, anyone from another galaxy, marijuana,Ash Ra Temple,Ligeti and tooooo much more!!
Sounds Like: Psychic Date think they have a very unique canvas of sound which falls somewhere in the Post-Rock genre and can vary anywhere from ethereal psychedelic ambience through to passages of fully-cranked speed-jazz-noise-metal-improv but never losing sight of melody and rhythmical precision. We value your comments and support and maybe together we can form a new genre !.
