Bacalhau

About Me

The band saw the light of day in the course of Marie Koop’s graduation project, during her last year of cabaret study at the Heirman Teirlinck Institute. Intrigued by the melancholic sounds of fado, she tried to submerge in this music. Both traditional fado (like Amalia Rodrigues’ music) and more recent fado music (e.g. Christina Branco and Mariza) became a fundamental part of her daily life. Bacalhau blended these traditional sources with their own musical infuences (jazz influences are to be discovered next to gipsy sounds, whereas the lyrics maintained original) and started playing in many bars in Antwerp, at the theatre festival in Ostend, the Zuiderzinnen festival in Antwerp and in the famous Bourla theatre and the celebrated Warande in Turnhout. When Marie was artist in residence in the latter cultural centre, Bacalhau had the opportunity to perform there twice. Marie snars and groans, whispers and hums stories about love, fish and death. Supported by two guitar players and a double bass player, resp. Tim Liebaert, Laurens Duerinck and Filip Vandebril she will take you to a more southern place, where you can taste the more secret parts of the human soul. Where will you be at this evening?SITE
