Black Zebra

About Me

Most Zebras that live in the plains of Africa are white and covered with black stripes, but the Black Zebra is a rare breed with a coat of black with white stripes that lives and rules the rock and blues scene in Jamaica. This scarce found quadruped symbolizes the unique strain of music this band of the same name possesses. The Roots and Reggae meets Hard Rock – welcome to the jungle.
Wayne McGregor, a mild-mannered lawyer by day and Mark Pritchett, Managing Director of the Jamaica Observer (The White Stripe), first joined forces in 2004 and Black Zebra was the resulting progeny.
Today, BZ is Wayne McGregor (guitar & lead vocals), Richie C (drums), Katie Iver (vocals & percussion), Jilly Fingaz (keybaords & vocals), Trevaldo Thompson (bass) and David Lazarus (guitar).
The influences of the band span from the Jamaican roots of Steel Pulse and Third World to the likes of modern legends U2 and classic Archetypes Led Zeppelin.
BZ have seen their share of music in that crazy performance Jungle and lived to tell the tale.
They’ve braved the most discerning patrons including former Jamaican Prime Minister P.J. Patterson as well as the massive crowds of the most celebrated Jamaican Jazz lover’s event the Air Jamaica Jazz Fest. In fact they’ve done so 4 years running from 2005 to 2008 to rave reviews. They even backed the lone Feminine of the herd Katie who performed her own little set quite capably in 2007. Another enviable credential was their appearance at the official opening of the new Hard Rock Cafe in Ocho Rios in 2007.
When the Reggae Rockers aren’t rocking the stage shared with stars of International fame they get intimate at local Jamaican places like the exclusive Red Bones Blues Café and Tuesday Nite Live at the Village Café, among other venues. They have also competed in the local finals of the 2005 Global Battle of the Bands.
You’ll get them jamming Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man" to the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" and Radiohead's "Creep", but their most popular original songs are "Provide", "New Direction", "Just Can’t Get Over You" and "My mind at Ease".
Keep your ears open – the Black Zebra is coming – they are recording an album and plan to release a single sometime in the near future.

BZ @ the Village

So the show went well. We had a dub poet open the show (who's idea was THAT?).  Then GAS MONEY took to the stage and rocked out. Great performance, as usual from those guys. Then we took the stag...
