Saxophonist rob chaseman grew up in New Jersey and moved to North Carolina to attend college. rob attended college at the University of North Carolina studing psychology and music. After graduating rob decided to stay on in Chapel Hill to pursue a career in music. He was very busy with several bands.
After several stints with the bands The Prozac All-stars", "Doxy's Kitchen" , "Zoot, Hose", and "Mel Melton and the Wicked Mojos" it was time for a change. Rob moved back to the northeast to continue his musical career in the New York City area.
"cloud" is rob Chaseman's first solo effort. It is a bass and sax duo cd featuring rob on tenor, alto, soprano and bari saxes along with long-time friend and talented acoustic bass player Doug Largent. 'cloud' is a collection of jazz standards with a modern day feel.
Each song has its own personality and displays a different mood. The connection and interplay between Doug Largent and rob really stands out on this CD. rob and Doug have been playing over 12 years together in one form or another. rob's playing has been described as 'crispy as a fresh batch of hot cracklins' by Larry Holice. "He can honk out the blues as well as play with a cerebral quality. He has a unique tone and a distinct sense of melody on all four saxophones. When he solos there is a feeling of playfulness, a sense of humor, and strong emotion that shines through."
rob has also recorded on the Apple Juice Kid's hip-hop cd 'Plus', on Andrew Dyker's pop CD 'zoot', on Beth Wood's folk CD 'Late Night Radio' and on Nikki Armstrong's R&B CD 'turnin and burnin' Gina Sicilia's CD "Allow Me To Confess", Dave Gross' CD "Crawlin The Walls". You can also find Robs' sounds on Dave Fields two CDs "Times A Wastin" and " All Wound Up". He has also recorded on organ player Rueben Wilson's latest CD 'Movin On'.
His sophomore CD 'helicopter' has just been picked up by www.Target.com. The CD is an original composition of an improvisational crescendo. rob was heavily influenced by both, Ravels' 'Bolero' and Miles Davis' 'In a Silent Way.'
According to rob 'helicopter' is based on the many cycles that exist in humanity and in nature. He was influenced by his own experience with introspection and the cycles of thought, perception and behavior that accompany it. The CD is a journey through the mind of one person's experience through a cycle. The path starts with a mood of ambiguity and simplicity and slowly moves on to a period of more action and purpose. From this place it builds into a catharsis of confusion and dissonance. It continues falling on solid ground displaying a new sense of clarity and sensibility.
rob recorded 'helicopter' in chapel hill nc with long time friends Stephen Levitin ( Apple Juice Kid), Matt Brandau, and Mark Wells. This quartet used to play together regularly so the group has a comfortable relaxed flow. That feel lent itself to create a piece that became cohesive, full of emotion and extremely creative. It was just four players improvising within the concept of one extended song. The end result was an interesting, moody, flowing musical experience.
rob has played in a variety of settings including a folk duo, a symphonic band , blues band and a funky quartet He has played with such great musicians and nice folks such as Melvin Sparks, Rueben Wilson, Grant Green Jr., Mike Clark, the Jimmy and Jerry Vivino (late night with Conan O'Brian), Jimmy McGriff, Gina Sicilia, Dave Gross, Dave Fields and Camp lo.
rob has a funky jazz band called "rob chaseman and subtone". The band consists of Dave Fields on guitar, Doug Largent on bass and Kenny Soule on drums.
In addition, rob can be found playing with Nikkii Armstrong and a Whole Lotta Blues, Chaz DePaolo and the Jason Green and the Labor of Love.
