*****Are men allowed in Femina Potens?*****
Of course, we love men too. This isn't about a battle of the sexes or about excluding men in anyway. This is about creating an art space that is positive for women and transgendered persons. You can't create equality between the genders by excluding men. This is not a man-hating environment, but one of empowerment for women, transfolk, and genderqueers.
I felt there was a need for Femina Potens after going to show after show and wondering where the fuck all the women were. Then I noticed that they were in the audience swooning over the guys w/ guitars like they were gods.
I want to see more women and transfolk picking up a guitar, picking up drum sticks, a bass, stepping up to a key board... This is our stage too damn it and why should our money be going into supporting an industry that is dominated by men?
I love men. I love guys who play guitar and drums. But I think there is a problem that has to do with women, transfolk, and genderqueers feeling that it’s not valid for them to express themselves and their opinions. Music and art allow a person to be honest and put themselves out there in a raw and vulnerable way that is usually not "socially acceptable".
I'm disheartened when I find young girls and transfolk in an audience looking up at a stage full of white geeky emo boys who are putting their little broken hearts out there and letting us all hear about it, while that person has to go in the corner and confide to her/his/heir journal what she/ze/he feels. Far away from the eyes of the public.
And if all those thoughts were being published and on bookshelves everywhere things might be different. But those voices mainly stayed tucked away in a knapsack and then the bottom of shoe box or cedar chest.
This is why I felt a need for Femina Potens. I want transfolk, women, and genderqueers, especially our youth to see that women and transdudes and ladies rock. There are great, fabulous women, transgendered, and genderqueer artists, writers, directors, performance artists, teachers, musicians, healing artists, and more that are female-identified or female-bodied or identify somewhere outside of the gender binary system. I want men to know that grrrls and transfolk rock too. Time to take stage. Make your Voice Heard!
