The G-spot is Israel's leading hip-hop brand-name.
It is much more than the handsome medium-sized club it seems to be at first sight.
Since 1998, myself together with co-founder Kobi Varsano, are at the center
of the fast growing hip-hop community in the holy land.
Starting off as a homeless party line labeled "Planet Harlem", our
Hip-hop parties gave a then-very-rare opportunity for locals to experience the
universal appeal of rap, soul and R&B.
Israel's hip-hop scene was practically non-existent before the mid 90's. MTV's penetration to local households, together with mega-stardom of international hip-hop acts like Eminem and the Fugees, helped to nurture the small yet funky
hip-hop oasis we called the G-spot.
Where other clubs ignored Hip-hop, The G-spot always trumped all kinds of urban tunes, from hardcore rap to sweet soul, from reggae to funk, always remembering to promote local underground talent. For youth and adults alike, the G – founded at July 2000 as a small, stuffy place at the Tel-aviv sea-side – was a starting point for many Israeli hip-hop fans – and artists.
Be it the Zionist Power Duo of Subliminal and the shadow, the Palestinian protest group DAM, the oldskool- virtuoso Sagol 59, or the party anthem spawning Booyaka; All of These major artists and many others made sure to stop and perform for the G-spot's always interested crowd.
The G-spot always extended a helping hand for local artists; Most notably, Israel's first hip-hop-soul artist Momy Levy is managed by the G. Super-radical offbeat rap phenomenon Quami-de-la-fox and Mega-popular Rap trio Kele-6 are also a part of the G family.
April 2005 saw the G-spot's expansion to a new and much larger location, at 40 salame st. (Tel-aviv). Boasting 2 roomy floors, the new G quickly became a hit with the old G crowd, as well as satisfying many new faces.
Responsible for the first hip-hop truck at Tel Aviv's world famous love parade, Producing DJ contests, street festivals, Open Mic battles, and Break-dance show-offs – or even importing international talents - the G-spot keeps pumping urban culture into the mostly rock oriented Israeli music scene.
However, as of 2006, Hip-hop – once considered impossible to relate to in Hebrew – is Israeli Youth's most loved genre. Within 10 years, a huge change occurred – and Israelis see now hip-hop as an integral part of their culture. .
The G-spot is proud to be a part of that change.
See you at the party!
