Hey all and welcome to the Tribute page for River Phoenix and for Peta and so forth. I originally wanted to make this page about his band, Aleka's Attic, but within a few days, the focal point changed drastically.
Aleka's Attic and the music performed by them was a very very important aspect of River Phoenix's life when he wasn't acting. However, I want to take this time to talk about something even more important to him. Let me start with a quote by him, if I may.
"We need an extreme movement because what is happening to animals is so extreme. Some misinformed people claim that animal rights activists are terrorists, but these people are simply ignorant of who the real terrorists are - the companies and industries that torture literally billions of animals each year." (River Phoenix, The Animals' Voice Magazine - 1989)
River Phoenix was very much into the safety and ethical treatment of all animals. A vegan, he never ate or used any animal products, be it meat, dairy, or clothing. Riv's love and respect for the environment caused him to pay out of his own pocket for eight hundred acres of Rainforest in South America.
River is a life member of PETA, as is his brother Joaquin (Leaf Phoenix). The website can be located at www.PETA.org
Any donation is welcomed and, for a minimum of $16.00 USD a year, you can be a member of this wonderful organization as well. I'm a member of both PETA and the ASPCA. There are numerous other animal and environmental groups out there to join or become involved with as well.
To those who want to follow in River's footsteps, there are so many easy things you can do to help this earth flourish. Pick up garbage lying about. Break up plastic bags and six pack holders. Plant a tree or two. Plant a garden. Keep waterways clean by not polluting. This is our only home and if we don't start with just one thing, who will do it and when will it start? Tomorrow is always taken for granted, but we're not assured of tomorrow. Act now. The smallest effort makes a big difference, and this is something Riv tried to impart on his friends and fans. His voice may have been silenced to our outward ears, but in our hearts, it is speaking loudly and clearly. Let's vocalize River's passion by doing what we can for our Earth.

These are but a few ways to help take responsibility for those that can't do it themselves; animals and our environment. Let's do what we can and strive to ensure our world and all its inhabitants, be it tree, animal or person, has many many more Millennia here. Global Warming has started but it can be stopped. If we take it too far, however, we won't be here to see the charred land once green and blue and active with life.
These following people awed me with their myspace page. Within their bulletins, this person sets up driving schedules to help bring abused animals to decent homes. as in:
I need an animal to be taken from detroit michigan to tampa fla:
first leg from detroit to this city, driving time is one hour
second leg from town x to town b, driving time is one hour.
and so on til they get the animal to its new home where ever in the states it is going to. Whoever wants to volunteer to drive that leg can get ahold of that person who runs the page below. I saw it and thought that is a wonderful caring thing to do. wow..... do add them, and do spread this around. It touched my heart deeply. They do this all over the usa. If some animal is coming through your area, do see what you can do to help it get to a happy loving home!

A wonderful website that deals with Rivers life and times can be found here, at Rio's Attic. I have never found a more respectable site, nor one with such an honest and open outlook on all aspects of River's life. It doesn't paint him as a popular heart throb at all, and that would no doubt be the way he would prefer it. Check it out when you have some time - and prepare to get lost amongst its pages.
