Happy vibes from Mad Mongos Mike
I’ve had a love of music since listening to the old Robbie Vincent radio shows back in the early 80s. John Peel was also great for playing a real good Hip Hop tune. I went on to find jazz and started travelling to Dingwalls for the Sunday Peterson and Forge nights which lead to digging in so many record shops from Soul Jazz, Reckless, Blue Monk and many more. From buying Jazz I started buying Roots and Dub tunes from the likes of Youth Sounds, The Dub Shack at Camden Lock and Dub Vendor. And as I went on I found the wonders of the Samba and many visits to Mr Bongo. And did an odd spot of DJ-ing in my home town.
So my record collection has now reached about 5000+ and I always love going back though it and having a little dig.
I love hearing new tunes and always like listening to new mixes I find posted on the Web. I have also added some of my own compilations mixes for anyone who would like to hear them. These can be found in my Blog space.
If any of the downloads need refreshing please email and I will gladly
upload for you.
And if you have any tunes to recommend I would love to hear them.
So being a Soul boy lead me to an interest in graffiti art back in 84 and a mad love of the old school movement. ‘Subway Art’ by Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant really inspired me as did the Style Wars Documentary.
I enjoy looking at record cover/magazine designs such as those by Swifty, and abstract artists such as Georges Braque and Friedensreich Hundertwasser and the works of Antonio Gaudi. I like looking at spray can art, doodling on paper and then to canvas and painting abstract pictures. Visiting galleries and seeing installations always inspires me.
I set up the Mad mongos label to help keep me in touch with the music world I so love. Having spent a few years in a few jobs I didn’t like very much I decided it was time to set up business for myself. With t-shirts I can mix music genres with design.
Why Mad Mongos? Really I designed it with my dog Moses in mind and the crazy face’s he pulls. And also to give the clothing range a name to remember.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
