About Me

Annie Tangberg is a cellist specialized in contemporary music - written and improvised. She grew up in Oslo, Norway where she studied musicology at the university and cello at the Barratt Due Conservatory. In 2000 she completed her master-degree in chambermusic at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague. In the early nineties, still a student at the university of Oslo Annie decided to enroll for a jazz-summer course. For Annie, with a background from classical music, this was a real ear-opener. Meeting and playing with some open-minded,creative jazzmusicians set her off to explore improvisation on the cello, which she is still enjoying.Annie works in the Metropole-orchestra (chef-conductor Vince Mendoza) which is a big source of musical inspiration. Her musical curiosity and appetite is fed by all the great musicians she has had the chance to work with in the orchestra such as Herbie Hancock, Steve Vai, Mike Keneally, Nitin Sawney,John Scofield and many more -Besides the orchestra Annie is active in (chamber) groups and as a session/studio musician. She also composed and arranged music for silent films in cooperation with guitarist Florian Zenker and later her own stringtrio. Among others she worked with cellist Ernst Reijseger, Marc van Vugts Big Bizar Habit, Dick de Graaf, Paul van Kemenade, Wende Snijders, the Zapp! String quartet, Emmy Verhey and Tristan Honsinger.Annie plays on a regular basis with improvising string-orchestra Jargon, tangogroup el Conjunto and duo Percucello (with percussionist Niels Meliefste).During a project with popgroup Bauer there was a sudden need for a banjoplayer and for some reason Annie got that banjo pushed into her hands. It was so much fun that she is now playing banjo (and cello) with Sonja van Hamel band. The first cd will be released sometime in the fall 2009.At the moment Annie is preparing a brand new programme with Duo Percucello for the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam. In september she will join the musictheatre-group Veenfabriek, actor Jeroen Willems and the chef Andre Amaro on Governor's Island(NY) for 8 performances of the play/musical performance Orfeo. This is a part of the dutch/american celebration of the Hudson-year.
