About Me

My name is Joe McCarthy. I've lived in San Diego since I was eight. I’m single. I love my job. I’m an insurance agent. I love where I live. My family and friends are unmatched. I’m hooked on traveling and experiencing different cultures first hand. I have dual citizenship (England and USA). In 1996 I broke my neck surfing. Don’t be sorry. I’ve been a professional athlete for six years (swimming). I’ve competed in the last two Paralympics and am training for Beijing 2008. I’m hooked on racing half marathons. I’m making the transition to triathlon with Ironman Kona 2009 as my goal. I coach swimming and water polo in Coronado. The kids are awesome. I love to help people. Myself and five others have raised $1.2 million in two years to build and develop an adaptive aquatics facility in Coronado to promote health and wellness to people with severe disabilities. We break ground December 8, 2006 and open September 21, 2007 (my Mom’s birthday). I work with inner city schools in Los Angeles County promoting health and wellness. I’m a public speaker. I work with The Challenged Athletes Foundation to raise funds for people with disabilities to play sports. My Dad is my super hero. My parents have raised me to be well mannered, strong and independent. I never give up. When I lack skill, I will beat you with effort. 2006 has been amazing. 2007 is going to be even better. Obstacles are those frightening things you see when you take your eyes off your goals. Set yourself a goal and get after it!

Music:

I grew up listening to and learning about Motown and Northern Soul. My father has an extensive knowledge of music and I am fortunate that he passed it on to me. Motown in the sixties changed our country so much. Black people and White people for the first time had something in common, love for the same music. Music in the sixties pushed the civil rights movement forward. People like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield changed our world forever. The music was new and exiting. It touched on all of life’s lessons. My music tastes include most of the major influences of soul and rock'n roll. People like Elvis Presley and Jonny Cash. Soul players like Marvin Gaye, Teddy Prendergrass, Prince and Smokey Robinson. Music groups like The Temptations, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. In the past year I started listening to country music and have grown to love it. The lyrical content is so amazing and the music is so well produced. I listen to many different styles of music. One of my favorite bands are Dashboard Confessional. I really relate to their music. I'm always looking for new music, new sounds and styles. I really appreciate good production and great vocals.
