The Rev. Cynthia A. Wilson, a graduate of Dillard University and Southern Methodist University Perkins School of Theology, is a popular lecturer, preacher, teacher, conductor, and concert artist. She has written several articles as well as conducted numerous lectures and workshops all over the world. For the last two (2) years, as the Director of Religious Life and Adjunct Professor, Rev. Wilson was a catalytic agent, bridging the function of Higher Education and ecclesiastical entities in the Bethune-Cookman University community (Daytona Beach, Florida). Other study experiences include Eastman Conservatory at the University of Rochester (vocal performance) and the University of Detroit (Music Therapy).
She has shared the stage with dynamic leaders and artists such as Dr. Robert Schuller, Senator Hillary Clinton, Judge Greg Mathis, Nancy Wilson, Lionel Hampton, the late Rev. James Cleveland, Edwin Hawkins (“Oh Happy Day”), Shirley Caesar, Donald Lawrence, and Byron Cage whom she taught and mentored while in Detroit, Michigan. While serving as Diaconal Minister of Music at Polytechnic United Methodist Church, the Fort Worth Conservatory of Performing Arts, which was housed at the church, invited Rev. Wilson to become a part of the faculty. It was there that she met and became a teacher/mentor for the dynamic, contemporary artist, Mr. Kirk Franklin.
Performing everything from Handel to Mahalia and Bach to Boogie, Rev. Wilson has toured Europe, including several festivals of music and recording concerts in Copenhagen, Denmark, a Spirit-filled concert for the World Council of Churches in Brighton, England, and a memorable fund raising tour in Seoul, Korea sponsored by Africa University (Zimbabwe). One of the true highlights of her ministry journey includes a benefit concert for Africa University at Carnegie Hall in New York where the late Ossie Davis was the host. This event was sponsored by the New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
As an extraordinary vocalist and Grammy nominee, Rev. Wilson has numerous recording credits including her 1993 breakthrough "New Songs of Zion" (Warner Alliance label) which was nominated for several awards. “Spirituals: Songs from the American Experience”, with Dr. S.T. Kimbrough, is a part of the Global Praise series (Board of Global Ministries). As Executive Producer, she featured the Ben Hill UMC (Atlanta, Ga.) Mass Choir CD "Prayers from the House, Praise from the Heart" as well as "….And All That Is Within Me” and was noted as the "Best Female Vocalist" at the Gospel Choice Awards in Atlanta, Georgia (1998). Her CD, "Simply Cynthia", features music from the 2000 General Conference of the United Methodist Church (Cleveland, Ohio) where she served as the first female and African American Director of Music. Rev. Wilson also served as Co- Director of Music for the 1996 General Conference (Denver, Colorado). "A CHRIST-mas Experience”, her latest CD, has warmed the hearts of audiences all over the continental United States and abroad reminding us that Jesus is indeed ‘the reason for the Christmas season’. For 15 years, as a member of the Academic Division for the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA), Rev Wilson provided instruction in vocal technique and was the featured soloist on the GMWA 1983 breakthrough rendition of “For God So Loved the World” (Lanny Wolfe). Her profound solo interpretation of “With A Made Up Mind”, which she co-wrote, helped win Donald Vails and the Choraleers of Detroit, Michigan, a Grammy nomination. “GOSPEL KONCERT”: Live I Radiohusets koncertsal” (Copenhagen) is her most recent release.
Rev. C, as she is affectionately known, is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. who awarded her the Pinnacle Leadership Award in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000. Other awards and honors include the Bellringer Award from Bennett College and the Outstanding Service Award from the Wesley Foundation (University of Texas at Arlington).
Having provided leadership on the National Task Force that produced the Songs of Zion, a worship resource that fitly represents the ethos and pathos of indigenous Black Church music, Rev. C was invited to serve as Co-Chair with Professor William B. McClain (Wesley Theological Seminary) to produce the sequel, Zion Still Sings! For Every Generation. This United Methodist Publishing House project, released in June of this year (2007), can be found in bookstores across the country and promises to enrich 21st century worship for all generations, cultures and denominations.
As the CEO of Free Indeed Ministries International, this New Orleans native serves as a consultant to Local Churches and ministries in the areas of Worship and Music. Presently, she is a part of the Women of Color Scholars Program sponsored through the Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) of the United Methodist Church and a student at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where she and her two daughters, Chiantia and Llewon Felder, reside.
