It's the year 2211.
San Francisco was on fire due to the attacks of a huge dragon being controlled by a ruthless megalomaniac named Ranier. At the same time, a trio of orphans, Malikai, P.J. and Sonia, embarked on a journey led by a mysterious winged-woman named Grace. She believed Malikai was destined for greatness, but he and his friends weren't so sure. During their journey, mercenaries of Rainier, intent on capturing or killing Malikai, chased them ruthlessly. The group enlisted the aid of Benoist, who offered his ship to take them to the island of Hawai'i.
Once there, Malikai met the first of five masters on his quest to achieve his "true" potential. Upon revealing to Malikai his predestined fate as the conduit for the vanished age of magic, the first Master Kamea was viciously slain by Rainier through his assassin, Onyx. But the ties that bound Malikai, P.J. and Sonia were straining under the pressure of fighting for thier very survival, and the journey to Tokyo to seek the training of the second Master Ren Watastu did not come without peril. Malikai drew closer to reaching his true potential under the guidance of the skeptical Watastu, yet the distance between himself and Sonia also continued to grow.
However, Rainier became impatient in his deadly pursuit of the group, and decided to unleash his own mechanized contrivance, built for annihilation.
