About Me

Nicholas’ studies began at 16 under the influence of local Cambridgeshire drum, bass and guitar teacher Tim Day. Tim was responsible for sparking Nicholas’ interest in music through his enthusiastic lessons. Soon after Nicholas began gigging with his own Rock band with local success. His interest then moved to the piano and he began taking lessons with retired session musician Richard Batty. Richard introduced Nicholas to the possibilities of Classical and Jazz harmony, during which time he was beginning to perform in local Pop, Rock and function bands. His studies continued at Hitchin College under London session guitarist Chris Gardiner and drummer Dave Story (The Enid). It was there that Nicholas discovered a love for the electric bass and performed with it more frequently. During his time at Hitchin Nicholas was involved with a variety of work including a variety of original bands, theatre work and function bands. After a gap year of teaching and gigging Nicholas decided to expand his musical horizons and study the renowned Jazz course at Leeds College of Music. Nicholas soon discovered a passion for Jazz during lessons with Jazz bassist Zoltan Dekany. Zoltan was also involved with Nicholas’ introduction to the double bass and its perpetual possibilities. During his time at LCM Nicholas performed in a variety of ensembles including Latin, African, contemporary and traditional Jazz as well as the LCM Big Band. Other mentors at Leeds College include Pete Sklaroff, Jamie Taylor, Omar Puente and Jiannis Pavlidis. All of whom were a great source of knowledge and inspiration. Now 23 years old and a BA (Hons) graduate of LCM, he is living in Cambridgeshire pursuing a career in performance, recording and teaching. Some of the projects he is currently involved with include performing with the acclaimed ‘Uiscedwr Big Band’ which involves talents such as Neil Yates, Karen Tweed, Anna Esslemont, Cormac Byrne and Dylan Bible.
