About Me

Marc Nischan is an artist, illustrator, and musician living in the Detroit area. Taking cues from Golden Age magazine illustrations, pulps and comics, kitsch and sci-fi/monster movies, 60s men’s mags and Rock and Roll and car culture iconography, he explores ideas of isolation, individualism, fortune and fate, power, beauty and belonging. Sometimes paintings are based on a commentary or a story, but more often a painting starts as an idea or sketch that is interesting enough to develop. Adding other characters from sketchbooks or making up new elements to flesh out the composition, the paintings become populated. Generally with girls, cars, and monsters.
Although most of the paintings have a back-story that guides choices about characters and elements in the composition, these relationships are played out in a surreal manner to keep the narrative intentionally vague. The intent is to make the painting give off a vibe without necessarily explaining everything, to give the viewer something to contemplate as they make up their own relationships for the subjects in the piece.
