About Me

My name is Joel Mullis. I'm originally from Charlotte, NC where I played guitar in a few bands, made a handful of records, did some touring, started a family and eventually decided to switch from performing to recording music. That journey lead my family to Atlanta, where I've worked for the last 5 years. Making a living doing music in the ATL often means working on a lot of urban records, and I am no exception. I've had the pleasure of recording or mixing for artists such as Ludacris, Ying Yang Twins, Keith Sweat, David Banner, Bohagon & The Neptunes, to name a few. I've also worked with some great independent rock bands like The Julia Dream, Heavy Mojo, Rehab and Lamb Handler.
I got my start in Atlanta working at Tree Sound, where I climbed the ladder from intern to assistant to engineer. In 2003 I was offered a job at Billy Hume's Zone Studios. Within 6 months I moved into the chief engineer position at The Zone. Working with Billy has been great for me as an engineer & mixer, and it's been a real learning experience working in a studio with no studio manager. I handled all my own booking, billing & collecting, which helped prepare me for my next venture...
Though I love the hip hop work I do at The Zone, I wanted to be able to do more rock production and needed my own space to do it. My private studio is called Fatback Sound. It's a comfortable but well equipped facility located near the junction of 400 & 285 in North Atlanta. I call it Fatback because like good home cooking, I'm able to take my time and get the flavor just right, without the pressure of a high priced studio.
