Speed of Purple is the newest musical project for ex-Tulipan member Sallie Campbell, showcasing her original compositions: both songs and instrumentals.
Sallie studied at the Conservatorium (Piano and Violin) and was a core member of Tulipan whose achievements include an Aria nomination for their debut album, two European tours and winning Triple J’s unearthing the world. Sallie has also written soundtracks (for QTC, La Boite, ABC TV, QPAC, and various short films) and has performed and written string arrangements with Speedstar, Grant McLennan, Kate Miller Heidke, Charles Foster Kane, Women in Voice, Silver Sircus, Kate Bradley, Dan Parsons, Christine Johnston, Tylea, Annie Lee and Chris Pickering. Sallie was violinist and backing vocalist with Kate Miller Heidke 2006-2008, and her highlight was performing at the 2007 Aria awards. She is currently a member of Deep Blue and Tylea and the Imaginary Music ScoreSpeed of Purple instrumentals blend rich folk/gypsy melodies and harmonies with dynamic rhythmic drive. An organic progression from her Tulipan days, these tunes conjure images of wild gypsy fireside parties, and long journeys through mystical landscapes.
The songs reveal a powerful new direction in Sallie's writing, fusing a folk/pop feel with stirring melodies, intricate piano and string textures and evocative harmonies.Poignant lyrics muse on the bittersweet beauty of life: hope, love, heartbreak and friendship.
The music of Speed of Purple is driven by piano, violin Sallie Campbell and Eugenie Costello, percussion and vocals from Velvet Pesu and Cello from Cathryn McKee.
Speed of Purple performances to date include Woodford Folk Festival, The Zoo, Ric’s, The Troubadour, Chill on Queen, Valley Markets, Medieval Fayre, Riverside Markets, Judith Wright Centre, Sydney’s Vanguard, Powerhouse, Valley Fiesta and most recently touring nationally supporting Kate Miller Heidke.
