The Shruggs

About Me

The Shruggs were started in the early 90's by Alex, Stan, Tim and Matt O. in an attempt to be bigger than the Bangles. In 1996, they added Matt K. (after seeing him sit in on drums with the newly reformed Bantams) in an attempt to be bigger than the Big Bopper. Ten years later, they actually still play, in an attempt to be bigger than they were back in 1996.

Band Members: Alex - vocals, rare guitar; Tim - more common guitar, but still rare, vocals, harmonica; Stan - sorta rare bass, backing vocals; Matt O. - Vox/Farfisa, jokes; Matt K. - drums, vocals for 6 seconds on closing number
Influences: Obscureness, the Beatles, mexican food, mexican food poisoning, Neil Hamburger "Great Phone Calls" record, The Keggs, kegs, Hulk Hogan's wrestling, "The Catcher In The Rye", vintage, Miller Hawk guitars and stuff
Sounds Like: Much like Wilson Phillips, The Shruggs come from a long line of musical parentage. Matt K. Shrugg, son of the legendary John Oates, sat in on drums at the ripe old age of 7 during the Hall & Oates tour of Calgary, Toronto & Montreal. Guitarist and lead vocalist Alex can thank his father, the Reverend Billy Gibbons for much of his talent. Tim Foster's song writing ability is no accident--when you are the prodigal son of Stephen Foster, how can you go wrong? Bass player Stan learned a lot from his father, Dean Kastran who re-invented bass playing in his band The Ohio Express. Matt Osborne, the organ grinder for The Shruggs, dropped out of University and dropped the U from his last name so as not to embarrass his uncle Ozzy.
