Jenny is a Boy is the project of singer/songwriter Adam A. Coppess. Born in a southern suburb of Indianapolis, he moved to Evansville, in southern Indiana, at the age of 16, where he eventually began playing guitar and writing songs under the name "Jenny," after the song on the Mountain Goats album "All Hail West Texas." His first album, titled "Jenny is a Boy," came out in the winter of '05, followed by a Midwest tour, a split with Blanketarms, and another full-length titled "Glad I Got a D in Basic Spanish". As Jenny developing an identity in the lo-fi singer-songwriter tradition, it came it about that since the project's first album was titled "Jenny is a Boy," people started to call the band by that name, and the change became official with the summer '06 with the re-release of "Glad I Got a D in Basic Spanish" under the official name "Jenny is a Boy." Adam moved to Bloomington IN in the fall of '06, strengthening ties with members of the music scene there whom he'd already worked with, such as Pattern Hungry Records and Bob Heavens Records. Over the next couple of years, Jenny is a Boy continued to develop its style - a pairing of earnest, personal, and occasionally funny lyrics with simple antifolk/punk acoustic guitar compositions - while touring the Midwest region multiple times, as well a venturing up to Maine and down to Florida, with bands such as Tinyfolk, Bad Ideas, Cool Conductor, and Boogdish, and recording a split with Life Under a Tree titled "Folkilla" and the full length "If I'm Still Alive." 2008 saw Adam teaming up with Bernard Kincius, Neil Cain, Dietrick Klooster, and Pete Wojcinski on rearranging older Jenny is a Boy songs for a full band project called The Proclamation, which released a self-titled album in September '08. This period also saw Jenny is a Boy adding Bernard Kincius as a second official band member on bass and experimenting with a blend of acoustic and electric on the EP "Self-Realizing" (May '08). The release in March '09 of a new full-length recorded and produced by Coppess, Kincius, and Klooster, signaled an exciting new direction for the band, venturing into higher recording quality and a full-bodied electric sound complete with drums. The album, "Is it a Shame?" features exciting contributions - Dietrick Klooster on trombone, Jimmy Brown of Bloomington's Dust from 1000 Years on Keys, and cover art by recognized artist Lauren Angel - and introduces Jenny is a Boy as a full band project.
