About Me

During the summer of 2005, three Youngstown natives: Dominic Gatti, an urban studies student at Cleveland State University, Adam Chizmar and Kate Butler, two Art Institute of Pittsburgh graduates, met at a local sandwich shop in Pittsburgh to discuss the potential of forming a very cutting-edge urban clothing company. With major cities like New York, Chicago, Toronto, and San Francisco being their models, they sought to establish a similar type of company, however, one that would create alternative tee shirts and such that represent their region. That being--The Rust Belt.
After considering the competition and recognizing the potential market for such apparel, â€œRusty Watersâ€ was formed later that summer when the three met again. The name was chosen, after a long night of brainstorming, to represent the significant waterways in Northeast Ohio and Western Pennsylvania stretching from Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, to the Mahoning and Shenango Rivers in Youngstown, all the way down to the Golden Triangle in Pittsburgh, PA. These stoic lakes, rivers, and streams made it through the toughest and rustiest of times in American history, along side the cities that sit on their banks. These are the underrepresented places we so proudly represent. We are the voice of the Rust Belt.
