Although nowadays a very structured band, Barnett has admitted that:
"the first few sessions we had no idea. We jumped straight into originals, completely cut the bullshit, and produced god awful songs. I was on keys at that stage and had no idea about music composition, It was anything goes... real fun though!"
Instrument rotations ensued, and Barnett was placed on rhythm guitar and vocals, Shaw on Lead Guitar, Hill on Bass and Keyboards and Mulcahy on Drums.
In 2007 Jaycee Squared began recording demos and gigging. Describing their first gig, Hill stated:
"it was terrible. Now it's hilarious, but back then... (pauses) It was down at the CWA, now notorious for its high energy hardcore shows. We had no idea what crowd we'd be expecting at that time, but when we got on stage we were meeted with a room of black wearing hardcore fans. (laughs) It got worse, Barney's mic wasn't working and let's just say we weren't very warmly welcomed. One guy described us as elevator music... but I still go there to see bands play."
In the Summer of 2008/2009, Jaycee Squared began recording their debut Ornament EP in the lounge room of Barnett's house. The material is set for a June/July release date.
Despite their debut not having been released yet, Shaw has mentioned the band has already started working on their follow up.
"yeah, this one's definately gonna be more adventurous. From my impression of the songs so far, there has been a real stylistic change. Stranger time signatures and much more electronically inclined. Since recording Ornament, Liams got an MPC, Conors got a couple of Kaoss Pads, I've got some new effects and Barney's been working on programming on his computer."
At the start of Winter 2009, Hill and Mulcahy started a new side project titled The Arc . Hill describes the new project as "an experimentation into the music I'm really diggin at the moment. Completely electronic. Liam programming beats while I rock old crappy keyboards."
Jaycee Squared has recieved airplay on local alternative radio station 4ZzZ and has been played on commercial radio station Nova. Response from the public has been unanimously positive with reports such as:
"With a style thats fresh, cool, and seriously breaking frontiers, these guys are sure to (be) up and coming" (LukeIsSexy)
"Jaycee Squared is like a normal telephone, but it has room for a screwdriver inside." (The Prior-Art-o-Matic)
