Located on the Ohio River in Gallia County, 40 miles up river from Huntington, West Virginia, and 50 miles down river of Marietta, Ohio.
"City of the Gauls" or Gallipolis, the third oldest city in Ohio was settled in 1790 by French aristocrats escaping the guillotine in post-Bastille Day, pre-revolutionary France. Gallipolis (gal-i-po-lees') is the county seat of Gallia County. Major employers in the area include American Electric Power (Gavin and Kyger Creek coal fired power plants, on the Ohio River), Holzer Medical Center, and Walmart. Other industries include dairy and tobacco farming. Recreational activities include boating, fishing, and hunting. Music includes country and western.
