Jazz88 All-Stars

Not really "all stars" in any meaningful sense of the word, this regular ensemble assembled under the umbrella of the local all-jazz public radio station at San Diego City College has nevertheless put together a first-class album of straight-ahead jazz. Featuring three songs by Wayne Shorter, and one each by Miles Davis, Dexter Gordon and Joe Henderson (plus one original song), it's a nice set of lesser-known works by some of the biggest names in modern jazz. The set was recorded last summer in Rancho Bernardo's Studio West during one of the station's Live Lunch shows designed to bring live jazz to North County, and puts the band in front of a knowledgeable (and appreciative) crowd.North County Times- September '07
