vox vespertinus is susan dumett, a classically trained vocalist who uses her powerful, yet ethereal voice to explore the tenuous relationship between darkness and light. her range (4+ octaves) allows her to evoke sounds both angelic and primeval. vox v has performed and recorded with a diverse array of world-class musicians and in a range of genres including: experimental, classical, gothic-industrial, electronic, sacred, and world music. she often innovatively employs looping pedals to create moving, otherworldly sonic tapestries within both known and original pieces.

One of the highlights of the album is “Sound and Recent Sorrow…†Levi’s memorial to the victims of recent natural disasters (the S.A.R.S. epidemic, Indian Ocean tsunami and Katrina). The track include the hauntingly beautiful voice of guest vocalist Susan Dumett, of Vox Vespertinus, who Levi met while performing at the Temple of Joy at Burning Man 2005.Arguably the first ever “Asian-American Blues,†it is a juxtaposition of Chinese Harp and Violin (Gu Zheng and Erhu), jazz piano, searing guitar and operatic vocals.
