ROOT Music Scholarships
We will be offering scholarships to youth attending low-income schools in rural Tennessee and throughout the Mississippi River and Gulf Coast states of the Southeast (TN, MS, LA, AK, & TX) who want to pursue postsecondary education in music. We believe that supporting the higher education of youth who want to devote their lives to music is essential to preserving the traditions of roots music and taking roots music to new places literally and conceptually. Even further, providing access to music education to young people who may not otherwise be able to afford it is at the heart of the change we want to see in the world. Toward these ends we plan to offer at least 10 scholarships to graduating seniors in the class of 2010! We will also be partnering with colleges and universities throughout these states to establish scholarships that will bring in talented students from racially and socioeconomically underrepresented groups into their music departments. We have an ambitious fundraising program planned and are accepting any and all donations of any amounts toward the ROOT Music Scholarships.
Instruments for Youth Program/Music Lessons/Rock and Roll Camp
R.O.O.T. plans to immediately begin a program that acquires used and donated instruments from artists, labels, and music stores that can be repaired and donated free of charge to local schools and music programs. While there is more need than we can potentially fill, our initial focus area will include impoverished regions of rural and urban Tennessee and major urban centers on the west coast (initially Los Angeles and Ventura counties). We will also offer free guitar and piano lessons for youth by subsidizing the stipends of professional musicians. Finally we plan to begin offering rock and roll camps during the summer where youth will have extended opportunities to learn about all aspects of the music industry.
Independent Artist Showcases
R.O.O.T. will host showcases at major roots music festivals where we will invite up and coming roots artists to play. We have already hosted showcases at the International Folk Alliance and SXSW during 2008 and we plan to add several festivals in 2009. Finally we will promote all of the artists who will participate in the annual Music at the Roots Festivals.
Educational Concerts
R.O.O.T. will organize and subsidize educational concerts to local schools, music programs, and community organizations bringing high quality roots acts to populations that would not normally have access to them. Working with these other organizations, R.O.O.T. will locate artists, arrange transportation, and offer a small stipend to the bands that agree to perform.
Music At The Roots Festival
R.O.O.T. will host an annual roots music festival that will serve as a forum for artists as well as a fundraiser for the foundation. Our goal is to find an ideal location for the event in 2009 and launch the festival during the summer of 2010.
