MALCOLM, ASSATA, MARVIN, LANGSTON, MILES, RAKIM, MAGIC, ALI, ALICIA, JULIUS, THE PEARL, GORDON PARKS, FRANK MILLER, AND ON, AND ON, AND ON... As a journalist workin' in sports and entertainment media i've met a lot of celebrities. Since it's work, you start to view them in their real life situaions. In other words, you stop seeing them as otherworldly beings and look at them as flesh and blood creatures who have jobs that put their faces in front of millions of people. They are extraordinary, but not because they are famous. And some of them are as profound as they look in magazines or on TV. And some of them are not. But there are still a few, for me, who get me shook. When I met Chuck D for the first time, I was trippin'. The music of Public Enemy helped give voice to my soul as a kid. I suppose, if i ever get a chance to talk with Magic it will be the same vibe (or any of the icons I listed above). As much as the media would like to credit itself as the sole force behind a superstar's shine, the space where we hang our favorite stars is more important. We all own a universe.
