My oldest, dearest friend has left the country.
Up and bolted for the border or the airport & landed in some older, more cultured land.
Before she leaves, I up and bolt for cooler weather & head up north in my dear ole dad's pickup.
The man gets me down up here, so I quit mid-shift,

Point being before all this up and bolting,
My oldest friend packs a suitcase of mine with as many of my books as I've recommended to her.
She fills my suitcase with my precious books & sets off home to read them
The only thing is now I'm paranoid
The only thing I love more in this world is than those fucking books is my dearest friend.
Now I've got all my chips in one spot
& if that damned house of hers burns up while she's sleeping
There goes everything I love
All this resting on some stranger
with a cigarette butt and some fucking dry grass next to her house & I'm over.
Needless to say, I haven't been able to sleep unless she & the books are apart.
The rest of the time you can find me pacing her front lawn
Glaring at smoking strolling strangers.
