"I was gonna rip his heart out, I'm the best ever. I'm the most brutal and most vicious and most ruthless champion there's ever been. There's no-one can stop me. Lennox is a conqueror? No. I'm Alexander, he's no Alexander. I'm the best ever. There's never been anybody as ruthless. I'm Sonny Liston. I'm Jack Dempsey, there's no one like me - I'm from their cloth. There's no one that can match me. My style is impetuous. My defense is impregnable, and I'm just ferocious. I want your heart. I want to eat his children. Praise be to Allah!" Mike Tyson
Knocked Michael Spinks out in 90 seconds of the first round, and all time great and who at that time was actually favored by some to beat Mike. Spinks was the "linear" champion from the light heavyweight division. Tyson had already taken all 3 belts and was the undisputed heavyweight champion. He beat the WBC, WBA, and IBF champion, the former WBC former WBA former IBF champion, all in about 3 years time. This would be the last great fight Tyson fought before becoming mentally unstable and ultimately fuking up his shot at being the greatest heavyweight of all time...(after this fight, mike fired kevin rooney; cus's disciple, because rooney was trying to treat tyson like cus did but mike says it best " you aint my fuking daddy, you aint cus" rooney had the training techniques that he learned from cus, but they had a hatred in between each other that still remains 20 years later.
The late great Cus D'Amato, trained former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson, and former light heavyweight champion Jose Torres in the 60's and 70's. Tyson's mentor, and the creator of the "peek a boo" style of fighting. He took Tyson in when he was young and had no where to go, and immediately knew after training sessions that he would be the youngest heavyweight champion of the world ( 20 ) in which he did fulfill. However, Cus was no longer alive when he achieved it. One of the greatest trainers of all time, and did it all without asking for anything, no money no nothing just legacy.
Some quotes from this great man
"People who are born round don't die square."
"Dont worry about being scared going into a fight. Its when you aint scared thats the time to worry. Fear is the friend of every good and reasonable athlete. -
A shame he wasn't alive when mike was on a spiral downwards, fame, women, and fortune was his down fall.... he thought he was invincible. He had no fear, we all know what happened when mike stopped training. Buster Douglas was inspired to beat Mike he wanted to achieve some level of greatness after his mother passed away, he put on an impressive showing, never achieved anything else in boxing after he beat him. Douglas was to be a tune up fight for mike, before he was to fight Evander Holyfield in 1991, a 42-1 underdog, inspired, trained mentally and physically, to fight a man that just wasn't ready or "mentally" prepared.. Mike thought he was "invincible", what does this equal? Quite possibly the biggest upset in SPORTS history.
Remember that Tyson floored douglas in the 8th round, and the referee gave him a long count to get back up, he was very excited at the fact of the unbeatable being beatin.. it was abouta 14 second count instead of a 10... in the fight game that means a lot. It gave buster much time to recover, buster came with the perfect fight game he was ready, but tyson had every tools needed to be the greatest heavyweight of all time. He was an excellent champion, but he was like any other person at that age. He didn't want to train, he wanted to party!!! which was his downfall... only thing he lacked was the mentality, which is 75 % of the fight game. douglas beat the long count of course, and in round 10 he made a huge comeback from the knockdown , shocked the entire world TYSON KO'D
of course, nothing was usual about tyson's fighting style in that ring that night he was 23 years old he wanted to have fun, fame women fortune. he lost focus shit happens. buster douglas was the total opposite THAT NIGHT.. it made history. The douglas that showed up to fight tyson, would give any heavyweight great a tough fight. he was determined, he wanted to set his legacy in stone...
"The hero and the coward both feel the same thing, but the hero uses his fear, projects it onto his opponent, while the coward runs. It's the same thing, fear, but it's what you do with it that matters."
"When two men step into the ring, one and only one deserves to win. When you step into the ring, you gotta know you deserve to win. You gotta know destiny owes you victory cos you trained harder than your opponent. You sparred harder. You ran farther.
"You dont get hit, you dont lose. Its as simple as that. Once you learn to stay low and tuck behind your gloves, in constant motion, no one is gonna be able to land nothing.
"Lies and deceit. Subterfuge. Thats what we deal in. Dont ever let anyone know your real intentions. Champion fighters, champion liars. Best in the world.
"A boy comes to me with a spark of interest. I feed the spark and it becomes a flame. I feed the flame and it becomes a fire. I feed the fire and it becomes a roaring blaze." This is actually written on his tombstone, it summarizes what kind of man he was, a mentor and great trainer. Genius with his words, and his style of fighting. A very eccentric and one of a kind person.
"Float like a butterfly sting like a bee, his hands can't hit what his eyes can't see. Now you see me, now you don't. George thinks he will, but I know he won't"
