"I am a third generation musician following the footsteps of my father and his father before him. I can remember as a child listening to my grandfather, Beecher Delk, effortlessly breathing life into the fiddle and banjo. I would sit by his side for hours as even the air became captivated by the sounds he could create. I am sure that those experiences accelerated my appetite for musical creation." DeLk.
In 2006, a clash of musical styles was merged when Johnny Delk on vocals and guitar, Scott Edwards on Bass, and Justin Chilla on drums musically collided. The vocal style of DeLk is heavily influenced by blues based and southern rock grooves. Edwards and Chilla provided the punk funk and soul DeLk needed to propel his vision of combining southern based music with a funky overtone that would set the band apart from others. Later that year, Steve Smith was asked to join the three piece which provided yet another influence of musical style to the ensemble with his vocal approach and tone. Finally, Jud Strickland was added to the band, as lead guitarist to complete our circle of madness, and add the finishing touch to our sound.
Collectively, the band is known as "The Riff Raff".
Johnny Delk can be heard playing the local Jacksonville music scene with The Riff Raff, as well as, occassionally guest appearing with Jacksonville local cover band, The Rhythm Cure, or providing an acoustic show of original tunes as a solo artist under the name "Strykly Delk".
For the solo appearances of Strykly Delk, the overall tone and feel of the music is changed to more of a songwriter's vehicle of expression thru blues, country and southern soul music. This ensemble includes Johnny Delk-Vocals/Guitar; Jud Strickland-Lead Guitar/Mandolin; hence "Strykly Delk", Bill Smith-Lead Guitar/Dobro adds a unique twist to Strykly Delk with his smoldering Southern Swamp Slide.
In whatever ensemble, Johnny Delk is still striving to perfect his sound and develop original tunes that would cultivate an audience that would allow the artist to spread his creative wings.
