Alex Birnie is an up and coming actor and singer, spanning multiple genres of
performance. His work has included live theater, musical theater, jazz, acoustic
singer/songwriting, funk, pop/rock, and classical art song.
He began his career at the age of 12, as a former principal soloist and first
international member of the Vienna Boys Choir. With the choir he performed in
over 15 countries, while working with some of the worldʼs most esteemed artists
and conductors. Most notably, he has sung as a soloist under the direction of
Riccardo Muti, Kent Nagano, and Sir Neville Marriner, and has performed with
the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna State
Opera, and Calgary Opera.
He discovered his love for the theatre at Oberlin College and Conservatory,
where he has studied music, theatre and economics for the last five years and is
expected to graduate in May 2010. His recent work in theater has included
leading roles in Oberlin College productions of Sunday in the Park with George
(George), Reefer Madness! (Jimmy Harper), Tennessee Williamsʼ Vieux Carré
(The Writer), and additional roles in The Heidi Chronicles (Peter Patrone) and the
political cabaret group The Green Balloonʼs production of Sixties Songbook. He
also performed in an evening of Stephen Sondheim music, during Sondheimʼs
recent interview tour with Frank Rich.
He has been a singer and keyboardist with several bands, performing alternative
rock and funk music. He has also performed with recording artists Cliff Richards,
Jennifer Paige, James Ingram, Steve Lukather (Toto) and Coolio, as well as
violinist Julian Rachlin, singer Vincenzo La Scola and producer/composer Peter
Wolf in a 1999 production of ʻProgressionʼ, Wolfʼs modern symphony performed
at the Linzer Klangwolke in Linz, Austria.
