About Me

Alex Birnie is an up and coming actor and singer, spanning multiple genres of performance. His work has included live theater, musical theater, jazz, acoustic singer/songwriting, funk, pop/rock, and classical art song.
He began his career at the age of 12, as a former principal soloist and first international member of the Vienna Boys Choir. With the choir he performed in over 15 countries, while working with some of the worldʼs most esteemed artists and conductors. Most notably, he has sung as a soloist under the direction of Riccardo Muti, Kent Nagano, and Sir Neville Marriner, and has performed with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna State Opera, and Calgary Opera.
He discovered his love for the theatre at Oberlin College and Conservatory, where he has studied music, theatre and economics for the last five years and is expected to graduate in May 2010. His recent work in theater has included leading roles in Oberlin College productions of Sunday in the Park with George (George), Reefer Madness! (Jimmy Harper), Tennessee Williamsʼ Vieux Carré (The Writer), and additional roles in The Heidi Chronicles (Peter Patrone) and the political cabaret group The Green Balloonʼs production of Sixties Songbook. He also performed in an evening of Stephen Sondheim music, during Sondheimʼs recent interview tour with Frank Rich.
He has been a singer and keyboardist with several bands, performing alternative rock and funk music. He has also performed with recording artists Cliff Richards, Jennifer Paige, James Ingram, Steve Lukather (Toto) and Coolio, as well as violinist Julian Rachlin, singer Vincenzo La Scola and producer/composer Peter Wolf in a 1999 production of ʻProgressionʼ, Wolfʼs modern symphony performed at the Linzer Klangwolke in Linz, Austria.
