About Me

A professional musician for most of my life recording music and playing live for over 30 years, and a teacher for the bits in between. I am originally from the north-east of England (Hartlepool to be precise!) were I played the usual working mens clubs as a terrified teenager for a couple of well known show bands of the time. I moved to London in 1980 on the advice of two close friends one of whom was Russ Nicholson (Nic!) of the Jack Parnell Orchestra fame who also taught me the principles of music theory, how to sight read and what constitutes a good pint of beer. Thanks Nic I never looked back from that point. On moving to London I was increadibly lucky to meet the late (great) John Entwistle of the Who at a party who (no pun intended!) gave me some advise on how to get into the London music scene, which eventually worked and I ended up doing the odd recording session around town and then into the world of TV. I eventually ended up going to uni in my late twenties as a part time student whilst still working as a session player before lecturing in HE and FE and then moving to Kent (England) with my family in 1994. I still live and teach in Kent, but travel around when session work comes up. I am also in the process of setting up a music school (in Kent) specialising in bass guitar and guitar tuition. Setting up the music school is one of my life long ambitions which should take off in the next year or so. I am also finally in the process of recording and producing a debut bass solo album, which I have been unable to complete due to lack of time. Seven of the tracks are recorded. I will eventually demo a number of tracks on this site to get some feedback from all the musicians out there.19/5/07 The new guitar and bass school started today and looks like will be a success. The school will run on an every other week basis until the student numbers make it practical to make it a weekly affair. The students vary in age and at present range from 10 to mid 50's. My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Usually just me if its not studio work. However I do like to get out when I can to local folk and blues jams and gigs to meet friends and make some noise.
Influences: All good music. Its a bit of a cop out, but there are so many people and styles of music that have influenced me. From the great classical composers through the Mississippi Delta blues Tamla Motown to 70's rock (Wishbone Ash), country, R&B, Celtic folk and pop. So its a bit of most genre. On an individual level Jimi Hendrix, he was one of the first people to move me. The master of disco funk bass Bernard Edwards the slickest bass player on the planet and the original Wishbone Ash bass player Martin Turner. He is still ahead of his time (Listen to the 'Live Dates' album. Total respect.
Sounds Like: Another difficult one. My music is a fusion of different styles translated to bass as well as middle of the road songs and compositions. Main instruments used are a Custom Warwick Streamer 6 string fretless bass, Warwick Thumb 6 string and 4 string fretted basses, 1956 Fender Precision, 1959 Fender Precision, 1964 Fender Jazz bass, 1972 Fender Jazz bass fretless, 70’s Shergold 6 string fretless baritone guitar, Musicman Bongo 5 string bass and several other acoustic and electric guitars and basses. Warwick bass rig, 1959 Fender Bassman combo, 1963 Marshall combo and Fender 112 Delux guitar combo. Various pedals. Oh I also play mandolin, but not as often as I would like.
