Students for a Democratic Society is is an association of young people for participatory democracy. SDS seeks to create a community of educational and political concern.SDS members have changed campus policies on student political activity, initiated spirited youth contingents at mass marches, organized sit-ins at military recruitment centers and held numerous conferences to discuss how to build a national student union.Students for a Democratic Society maintains a vision of a participatory democratic society, where at all levels the people have control of the decisions which affect them and the resources on which they are dependent. It feels the urgency to put forth a grassroots, bottom-up, direct democratic program . It seeks to stop all U.S. wars of aggression and foreign military occupations. It works to establish change on both the campus and in the community to the point where people will feel empowered and not ineffective.Who are the STUDENTS?
To be a student is merely to be one who desires to learn. Some of us are students of a university, but we are also students of our own lives, of our local community and spheres of influence, of a world that is changing at the pace of history. We are professors, staff, citizens, and workers. But what unites us is a shared effort to understand. What is DEMOCRACY?
We are concerned with democracy in the truest sense of the word: the freedom of all people to rule themselves. Democracy permeates all aspects of our lives. Democracy is not a passive observation, or participation at sanctioned dates and places; it is to continually evaluate and engage events, policies, and institutions that threaten our voices and ability to act.Why SOCIETY?
Society is larger than neighborhoods, cities, or nations; it is that formless entity that contains the totality of relationships between all life. The society we envision is a truly democratic one, in which we are all students of each other and teacher to none. The SDS is an education and social action organization dedicated to increasing democracy in all phases of our common life. It seeks to promote the active participation of young people in the formation of a movement to build a society free from poverty, ignorance, war, exploitation, racism, and sexism.Email [email protected] for questions. For more info about SDS vist:
